The Crescent

The Crescent is the official publication and voice of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. The journal, released twice yearly, provides the fraternity’s membership and readers a visual documentation of the organization’s mission and international programs. The magazine showcases the accomplishments, achievements and impact of Sigma Men from around the globe. The Crescent also offer readers a historical glimpse into the Fraternity’s cherished past, while highlighting the organization’s impact on the communities they serve today.

Crescent Article Submissions

Submission Policy:

Bios should be a maximum of 100 words, single-spaced and sent electronically. All bios should include: name, chapter, career title and contact e-mail. Please save as a .rtf or .txt file format. Include a high resolution head shot using the .jpg file format.

Articles should be between 200 and 600 words, single-spaced and sent electronically. Please save as a word.doc, .rtf or .txt file format. Photos should be saved using the .jpg file format and include a detailed caption outlining individuals depicted in the photos. Please include your name and chapter affiliation with all submissions.

Please note: With the large volume of requests we receive it is not possible to print everything. The Crescent Magazine editorial staff reviews all submissions with the International President and selections are based solely at our discretion. The Editor of The Crescent may edit articles for brevity and clarity.

AD Specifications

File Requirements

The color space must be CMYK or Grayscale. No RGB, LAB or embedded color profiles (such as ICC profiles). No files with PMS colors will be accepted without prior notification. Otherwise, all PMS colors MUST be converted to CMYK.

The preferred format for press is High Quality Print PDFs. Include all registration marks, crop marks, embed images. All fonts MUST be outlined and embedded (True Type fonts cannot be used for printing). PDFs must contain only 4-color process images (CMYK). Two-page spreads should be prepared as one complete file to ensure proper bleed.

RGB are the colors used by light-emitting screens:

Ex: Computer monitors, TVs, Scanners, Cameras, LEDs

CMYK are the basic ink colors that printers use to build Full Color (or Four Color).

Pantone, or the Pantone Matching System (PMS) is a set of inks that are mixed in the factory and provide a wide range of colors not always possible when mixing CMYK on the press.

Image Requirements

All images for ads and special sections should be color corrected and provided at or above our minimum requirement listed:

  • Mode: CMYK (convert all RGB and spot colors)
  • Format: .tif, .eps, or .jpg .pdf (PDF/X-1a)
  • Resolution: 300 dpi
